Shizenkan University: Open Sessions of The Future of Capitalism 2023 Program

Shizenkan University is launching their third edition of the global course "Future of Capitalism (FoC): New Roles and Challenges of Business Enterprises and Leaders".

The program consists of 11 online sessions with an outstanding line-up of speakers.

If you would like to participate in FoC, you can register and select one or all sessions, that you wish to observe.


Registration for all sessions closes on Friday January 27th, 2023.


A Youtube Live Stream link will be sent to you a couple of days before the scheduled session.


1. Tue, Jan 31, 13:00-15:15 CET Introduction and Visionary Leadership


Speakers: Paul Polman, Business leader, Campaigner, Co-author of Net Positive

Prof. Johan Rockström, Director, Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research

Facilitator: Junichi Kagaya, Project Leader, Future of Capitalism; Managing Director, IESE; and Member of the Board of Trustees, Shizenkan


In the opening session on January 31st Paul Polman, former CEO of Unilever and one of the world's most respected sustainable leaders, will be the guest speaker. Paul Polman is a core supporter of the FoC Project, and an outstanding business leader.


Johan Rockström, a prominent environmentalist and advocate of the planetary boundaries concept from Sweden, will be joining this session.


2. Tue, Mar 7, 13:00-15:15 CET Capitalism in the Age of Anthropocene


Speaker: Prof. Kohei Saito, University of Tokyo

Facilitators: Prof. Edson Kondo, Fundaçao Getulio Vargas, Prof. Niloy Biswas, Dhaka University


In the session on March 7th, Professor Kohei Saito of the University of Tokyo, will be speaking. Kohei Saito is an up-and-coming Japanese philosopher, that draws inspiration from late Marxist thought and advocates de-growth. His book "Capital in the Anthropocene" became a bestseller in Japan, and his interpretation of the Marxist theory has been translated into Spanish and English, influencing discourse around the world.



3. Tue, Apr 11, 13:00-15:15 CEST Conscious Enterprise


Speakers: Prof. Rebecca Henderson, Harvard Business School,

Jay Coen Gilbert, Co-Founder, B Lab

Facilitator: Prof. Raj Sisodia, EGADE Business School


On the April 11th session, Professor Rebecca Henderson, who created the course "Reimagining Capitalism" at Harvard Business School and proposed in her book of the same title that purpose-driven companies will create a new future, will be the speaker.


Raj Sisodia, co-author of "Conscious Capitalism" and now Chairman of the Conscious Enterprise Center at Mexico's leading technical university, Tecnológico de Monterrey, and Jay Coen Gilbert, who created the B Corp certification system will also join this session.


4. Tue, Apr 18, 13:00-15:15 CEST Integrated Value-Based Management


Speakers: John Elkington, Founder and Chief Pollinator,

Volans Pavan Sukhdev, Former President, WWF International

Facilitator: Prof. Lawrence Loh, National University of Singapore

In the session on April 18th, John Elkington will be speaking on the concept of the triple bottom line swayed corporate accounting and the subsequent trend in non-financial statement disclosure.


Joining this session is also Pavan Sukhdev, who presented a framework for integrated management in his book "Corporation 2020". Pavan is a former President of WWF International and Founder and CEO of GIST Impact. Corporation 2020 rethinks what value creation means for companies as they shift from a shareholder economy to a stakeholder economy, and also confronts the negative externalities that companies have. The facilitator is Professor Lawrence Loh, who teaches corporate and governance theory at the National University of Singapore.
